Sep. 16th, 2005 09:17 pmSusan stands in front of the window, carefully taking ledgers off the shelf and stacking them neatly in a box on her desk. Frequently, she pauses for thought, looking out at the lake.
It's not the first time she's changed rooms at Milliways, say true -- but it's different this time, oh aye. Not bad, never that-- but different.

Date: 2005-09-20 09:36 pm (UTC)"Nay-- go and get yer own, and I'll bring mine-- there's not all that much, say true."

Date: 2005-09-20 09:43 pm (UTC)Another kiss, and he's gone from the room again.
A few moments later, he's out in the hallway, carrying two boxes. The bottom one holds clothes. The top one...well, there's very little question as to what it holds, as an enormous red-and-gold sombrero apparantly couldn't ever fit in the box, and is balanced on top of it.

Date: 2005-09-20 09:58 pm (UTC)"Why Susan, you'd think there was something funny about this."
Beat.
"I think I have more hats than I have of anything else, by now."

Date: 2005-09-20 10:03 pm (UTC)"I'd not be surprised at all, 'Bert, not even a little bit." A pause. "And such pretty hats, too."

Date: 2005-09-21 02:54 am (UTC)It's essentially a larger version of the two rooms they inhabited before, with a double bed and two desks and sets of drawers.
Joanie's pineapple house is already resting on one of the desks; Cuthbert crosses to the other and sets his boxes down on it.

Susan beams at him. "Would'ee -- if ye'd want to bring my things, and -- and mayhap return the keys to the Bar, I'll keep working here, 'Bert."
She doesn't mind not seeing her previous room again, if he'd have it so. It's empty. What's important is here.

Date: 2005-09-21 03:59 am (UTC)While he's gone, and Susan unpacks the hats, there are two she might not know the origin of.
One is what she probably won't recognize--he doesn't either, say true--as a child's party hat--paper and conical, with an elastic chin-strap. It has a pattern of cowboy hats.
The other is a simple, unoffensive brown range-rider's hat that looks like it's hardly ever been worn, and it probably says something that this hat is the odd one out.

(I got you a perfectly good hat)
She runs light fingers over it, with a sad smile, and puts it on the shelf as well, very carefully.

Date: 2005-09-21 04:21 am (UTC)Then he spots the party hat, and laughs.
"Sunny gave me that one. Seemed to think it would look nicer than my regular one."

Date: 2005-09-21 05:07 am (UTC)Just before she closes the distance between them, she murmurs,
"Oh aye. I kennit." A beat. "But thee're married to me now, 'Bert."

no subject
Date: 2005-09-21 05:36 am (UTC)"Home." He repeats the word slowly, as if tasting it.
Then, glancing around at the room, "And I suppose the rest of our things aren't going to settle themselves, are they?"

Date: 2005-09-22 05:08 am (UTC)There's another quick kiss before he pulls himself away and goes back to the desk he's claimed, unpacking a motley assortment of books in both English and Great Letters, and notebooks whose content ranges from language notes to random scribblings and doodles to actual journal entries. Most of the notebooks go in desk drawers, while the books get lined up along the back of the desk.
